Alan Carr jokes he could join Matt Smith for night out in Northampton following awards win

COMIC Alan Carr toasted a great night for Northampton at the National Television Awards by revealing he was planning a night out in Bridge Street with Doctor Who star Matt Smith to celebrate.

The former Weston Favell School pupil triumphed in the Talk Show category for his show Alan Carr Chatty Man, beating Graham Norton, Jonathan Ross and the ladies from Loose Women.

The comedian, said: “I never win anything. I was ready to do my bitter clap.”

Speaking backstage, the funnyman said the secret of his success was giving his guests a drink.

He said: “They do open up with a Lambrini.”

There was double delight for Northampton when former Northampton School for Boys student, Matt Smith, who plays Doctor Who, won the gong for best Male Drama Performance as the timelord.

Mr Carr said: “Me and Matt bonded when he came on my show.

“It’s weird because Northamptonians are a bit like rats; you’re never more than five feet away from one.

“I befriended him and he’s got my number.

“Hopefully we can have a night out and go to Panache and maybe Roadmender, all the greats.

“It’s good for Northampton.”

Smith has shot to national prominence in his role as the Doctor and was delighted to land his gong, while Karen Gillan, who plays his sidekick Amy Pond, picked up the female equivalent.

Mr Smith said he had no idea who would replace Gillan when she left the series, but added he was in no hurry to join her in exiting the show.

He said: “I sort of always knew that me and Karen would have slightly different journeys in the show.”

He added the show was “bigger than all” of its cast and would have a “life after” he left.

Mr Smith also said he was not worried about being typecast by the role of the Doctor, saying: “As long as you’re worth your salt as an actor, you’ll be all right.”

Doctor Who writer Steven Moffat took to Twitter to congratulate the show’s stars, writing: “Mexican wave among all the Who fans please! I’ll start.”

4x4 fan. Cobblers to your sense of humour by-pass. Pity that Smithy supports Blackburn though!

for once a story and comments which are not belittling our town. However a night on Bridge Street is not what I'd call amazing...

This has really put Northamoton on the map. The world will be beating a path to our town (Athens of the SE Midlands), especially as we now have a world class football team.
