Sharpen up for summer in your garden

Winter is generally when gardeners spend time tidying sheds and greenhouses. It is also a good time to clean and repair some of the tools you will need to use again once spring arrives.

Lawnmowers

It is a good idea to check your mower during the winter months because this is when it is least used. If it needs to be repaired you should have time to get this done before spring.

When your mower is not in use for long periods always try to remember to disconnect the sparkplug and run down the fuel. Also, keep an eye on the oil level as if there isn’t enough it can cause serious damage to the engine when you use the mower.

Make sure you remove any grass or soil from the mower, this includes the blades, rollers and, if you have one, the grass box. Grease can be applied to the blades and rollers to stop them seizing up. Also, clean out the air filters as this will help to protect the engine.

Inspect the blades for any chips or worn patches and get them sharpened or replaced by a professional. If you have an electric mower, blunt blades can be sharpened with a fine metal file. If you have any doubts about how to carry out repairs always ask a professional.

Tool sharpening

If you use secateurs and other bladed tools regularly you will notice that the blades become blunt.

Forks, shears and spades can be sharpened using a fine metal file, but any that are badly worn will need replacing. Before you begin make sure you remove any rust with a wire brush and wipe with an oily rag.

Knives or secateurs can be sharpened by using a fine sharpening stone. When using this method, wipe the blade with some oil and push it forwards and to the side over the stone. To remove any rough edges hold the blade flat against the stone and brush it across the surface.

If you have bypass secateurs it is important to remember to only sharpen the outside blade and on hoes only sharpen the upper surface. Once you have finished wipe the blade with an oily rag before storing.

Wooden handles

Many of your garden tools probably have wooden handles, so to prevent them from breaking you need to ensure they are kept in good condition. Use boiled linseed oil on any handles that are unvarnished, as this will prevent the wood from drying out and splintering.

Before treating the wood, make sure you remove any dirt with a dry, stiff brush. If you have to use water, use a damp cloth and make sure you don’t allow the wood to get too wet because this could cause the handle to swell.

When applying the linseed oil, rub it into the wood using a rag and always allow the wood to absorb everything before applying more.

Power tools

It is important to make sure you look after any power tools you use in the garden such as drills, chainsaws, hedgetrimmers, leaf blowers or strimmers.

Make sure you clean any dirt that has built up on the blades or other metal parts. Then, to prevent rust, spray the surface of the metal with a general purpose oil. Switch the tool on as this will ensure the oil covers all areas.

Before you start using the tool again make sure the oil is topped up and the fuel is fresh. Inspect cables for any cuts or wear and replace the cable if necessary or at the very least make sure it is safe. If in doubt, take it to a professional.
