Using T-shirts to help transform and update your wardrobe

AROUND this time of year, despite the bursts of rain or even snow, spring ranges start to make their way into the shops.
But whereas the floaty pastel dresses may give you goose bumps just looking at them, the T-shirt is a great transition piece if you are desperate to update your wardrobe now.
Among the key trends for the next season are: grunge, couture T-shirts and festival chic, giving the T-shirt centre stage in a number of spring and summer looks.
It is also something you can buy now to form a layer under a funky knit or coat, until it can be revealed as part of a whole new look when coverings are discarded in warmer times.
One of the best stops in Northampton, if you are after a unique T-shirt design, is The Wardrobe, in The Ridings Arcade.

“We have a lot of animal themed prints and designs at the moment,” said Beverley Haywood, owner of the unisex clothing store.
“We first started to stock a lot of them in the autumn and it has continued to be a big theme on sweatshirts and T-shirts.
“In the girls T-shirts we sell a lot of different shapes, the over-sized style and the little cropped ones are pretty popular.
“Men’s T-shirt styles tend to be a bit more reserved and in the traditional shape, but we have a lot of different graphics and images on them.

“I look to buy in things that are a little bit different from the mainstream, and are not available in places like Topshop.
“We sell designs that will set people apart and stock small independent designers.”
ALSO flying the flag for the humble T-shirt is Northampton designer Jon Clough.

The 33-year-old from Far Cotton, started the line Summerjunk about two years ago and has just released Lucky9, a collection of graphic T-shirts and sweats featuring bold graphics.
“I have always been a massive fan of T-shirts, and I wanted to create some that were a little bit different from the kind you can find on the High Street,” he said.
“The range I have out at the moment is for men, but I will be putting out a women’s range in the next few months in time for the summer festival season.
“The festival vibe comes across in my designs, as I want to create items that appeal to a broad demographic, as well as being individual.”
