Grand designs by fashion label RedRock

YOU may not yet have heard of the label RedRock...yet.
But celebrities such as Peaches Geldof, Paloma Faith, Megan Prescott and Audrey Kitching all have.
The fashion line featuring an eclectic range of handmade and vintage reworked clothes is the brainchild of The University of Northampton fashion and textiles graduate, Kiran Lall.
After graduating in 2007, the 27-year-old who lives in Northampton town centre, went onto launch the label in 2009.
Since then it has grown into a successful web based business, which has not just caught the eye of celebrities, and fashion bloggers like Bebe Zeva, she is also now in talks to have it stocked by a major high street store, and featured in this year’s Clothes Show Live.
“When I finished university I wasn’t really using my degree at first, I did some travelling and teaching abroad,” said Kiran.
“But I had always wanted to do something with fashion.
“When I was younger I was always draping fabric around friends and I always sewed.”
When Kiran decided to launch her line she received support from The Prince’s Trust.
“I approached them and then I got a business plan together and learned about things like marketing. It took about six months to set up.”
Since then Kiran has sold her unique pieces through her website.
“No two of my pieces are the same,” she said.
“There is a real mix of styles and fabrics in my designs.
“It’s a combination of vintage re-work and hand-made. It’s for girls who want to stand out from the crowd and have fun with their look.
“People often go to vintage shops and find that the shapes are perhaps a bit out of place or its an awkward length, but if you alter a hem or a sleeve, you can bridge the gap between the decades.
“It is just about taking the piece and giving it balance, and mixing in modern styles and thinking about how to make it more up-to-date.
“I really like all the different prints you come across in the vintage market. I get old vintage bits and fabrics from suppliers all over the place.
“You can’t buy a lot of the prints now.
“Fabric is something I have always been interested in, and it is fabric that can inspire me. I am not someone who is influenced by designers.
“I think vintage has definitely become a trend in its own right.
“The great thing about vintage is it is timeless. When you find something vintage that you love, it’s a one off and it’s yours and you never have that problem of going to a party and finding someone in the same thing.
“It also has a longer shelf life in a style sense, it is something unique that is more yours.
For spring and summer Kiran has again created a varied portfolio of designs, each one unique.
“My summer/ spring range is again quite eclectic, but there are a lot of prints, shorter length dresses and tie-up blouses.
“I have used a lot of cottons and light fabrics.
“I tend to concentrate on dresses, skirts, tops, denim shorts. The dresses are probably the most popular, but I think when people buy a dress they feel they are buying a whole outfit.”
