Killer whale ice sculpture turns into Facebook hit after Chron publicity
A KILLER whale created out of snow by a group of people in the Southfields area of Northampton has become an internet sensation.
After the picture of the whale was uploaded on to the Chronicle & Echo Facebook page the image received more than 500 “likes” and attracted almost 100 comments.
Jason Eastaff, one of the people who helped sculpt the whale, said it had taken more than 15 hours to complete and had been the brainchild of Southfields resident Owen Carter.
Jason, aged 21, said: “Owen started making it at 7.30am on Sunday and we worked until 5pm and on Monday we were working until 4pm.
“Owen came up with the idea as he has made a gorilla, a kangaroo and an elephant in the past.

“He said he wanted to make something bigger and better.”
Jason said the group used charcoal and red food colouring to construct the mouth and body of the whale.
He said: “We had heaps of fun making it and we’ve had about 50 cars stop and take photographs of it.”
Comments on the photograph by Facebook users stated that “it showed that people who live on the same estate can do something good together” and it had “put Southfields on the map”.
Another impressive construction made out of the snow was completed by James Rose who created a Snow Buddha.
The majority of the snow in Northampton is expected to melt this afternoon with temperatures expected to climb above 1C with some sunnier weather.
Mike Lewis, weather station manager of Pitsford Hall, said: “There will be some mist and fog to begin with, this lifting gradually to reveal some spells of sunshine.
“It will remain dry with winds again light and mainly easterly.
“The cold weather will then continue on into Thursday with very little change. Temperatures by day will only make 2C, falling overnight to around freezing.”
Gritters were out on the main roads in Northamptonshire last night at 7pm and then went again at 3am to try decrease the risk of ice.

Friday, February 10, 2012 at 01:03 PMAnother first for Northampton. 'Awesome' doesn't do it justice. Why isn't this on the national news ? Let's see the French reaction to this. We may have lost an empire but we can certainly put two bits of snow together..........
