Millions of bubbles are set to fill the sky above Kettering as Wicksteed Park celebrates national Playday.

Families attending the free event from 11am to 4pm on Wednesday, August 5, are being encouraged to bring their own bubble makers to help create a magical event.

And the bubble-fest will be led by Tall Will from the London-based Bubble Inc team, who at 6ft 10in is the tallest bubbleologist in the whole world!

There will also be a host of other free activities on the day to keep youngsters entertained.

Playday, co-ordinated by Play England and celebrated with events across the UK on the first Wednesday in August each year, highlights children’s right to play and the importance of play in their lives.

Its aims match the vision of Charles Wicksteed, who invented the modern day slide and swing and who founded Wicksteed Park as part of his vision to inspire and encourage play as part of families’ health and well-being.

The free Playday event at the park will encourage families to get out and enjoy the fresh air and will feature a host of traditional fun activities and games, such as a huge waterslide, a straw mountain, a cardboard city, cycling, football, volleyball, arts and crafts, a dress up corner and space hoppers.

There will also be wet sponge throwing and water sprinklers to run through.

Wicksteed Park managing director Alasdair McNee said: “Our free Playday events are extremely popular and we are delighted to offer children and families the chance to take part in some free fun activities.

“The aim of the event is to encourage children to get out of the house and show them that there is a world of fun and adventure out there.

“We are asking people to bring bubble makers of all varieties so we can fill the air with bubbles and create a spectacular sight as well as having fun.

“People coming to the Playday might also decide to walk around in the fresh air while they are here or come back another day to see the widespread improvements and our new attractions.”

Tall Will is a very experienced and talented bubbleologist with an amazing repertoire of bubble tricks – from giant bubbles to the tiniest bubbles in the world.

Bubble sculptures, smoke bubbles, fire bubbles, bubbles inside bubbles, bubbles with his bare hands and tons more to delight and captivate every audience of any age.

In his 1928 book, A Plea for Children’s Recreation after School Hours and after School Age, Charles Wicksteed outlined his ethos on children’s play when he said: “I have good reason to believe that the park I have formed has changed the lives for the better, to a greater or lesser extent of thousands of children.

“I have direct evidence from mothers how whining, pale-faced children, complaining of any food they get, have come back with healthy faces and rosy complexions, ready to eat the house out after a good play in the playground.”
