I’ll concede from the outset, Star Of India has been one of my favourite Indian restaurants in Northampton for some time and it would take something catastrophic for it to end up with a bad review here.
Situated on the corner of Abington Avenue, opposite the Racecourse and around the corner from The Picturedrome pub, the Star Of India is a popular choice for those looking for a restaurant away from the Wellingborough Road.
My partner and I headed to Star of India midweek without booking in advance.
When we arrived we were promptly shown to a table where we ordered drinks. (two large Cokes, £3.25 each). We also ordered two popadums each (totalling £3.40)
I have a theory you can judge the standard in any Indian restaurant by assessing what follows next and thankfully, the Star Of India ticked all the right boxes. The popadums arrived warm, were crisp and came with a choice of five difference accompaniments, including mango chutney, spicy tomato sauce and diced onions. A lesser restaurant may scrimp here.
Midway through devouring our popadums, we ordered our starters and main courses.
Star Of India’s menu offers a staggering range of dishes, covering everything you would expect from an Indian restaurant, as well as some tempting house specialities.
To start, Alys ordered Tandoori Fish, a fillet of cod marinated then barbecued over charcoal (£5.50) and I ordered Tandoori Jhinga Puree, barbecued king prawns in a special sauce in a deep fried pancake (£6.95).
Both starters arrived promptly after we’d finished our popadums.
Alys’s cod was served on a bed of salad and was a vivid red on the outside, perfectly cooked and well seasoned.
My king prawns arrived on top of a crisp pancake and while I didn’t get to the bottom of what exactly the ‘special sauce’ was, there was a generous portion of prawns which tasted great.
For our main courses, Alys ordered Murgh Tara, described in the menu as a ‘wonderfully tasty chicken dish with a medium spicy garlic sauce, served on a sizzler (£9.95).
I ordered Khata Murg Korai, barbecued chicken in a spicy lemon sauce with fresh tomatoes (£8.95).
We also ordered a Peshwari nan (£2.50) and Saag Paneer (£3.95) as a side.
My main was packed with generous chunks of barbecued chicken breast and slices of lemon which ensured a zesty tang to the dish which was also suitably spicy.
Alys’s main lived up to its billing with great combination of chicken, garlic and spice.
While we both finished our main courses, we didn’t manage to finish the sweet nan bread or side dish.
Feeling incredibly full, we decided against ordering dessert, but a wide selection were on offer.
Despite being away from Northampton’s main restaurant areas, the Star Of India is definitely worth a visit.
It’s competitively priced and one of the best Indians in the town. It also offers take away and home delivery.
