Heavy rain didn't prevent around 100 members turning out for the Captain's drive-in at Staverton as Pete Perry and Liz Hall hit their first shots as the 2009 men's and ladies skippers respectively.
With a much shortened course for the men, scoring in the accompanying pairs betterball comp was very good with many pairings coming in with scores of 40 plus stableford points.

Paul Brown and Chris Hudson carded the best total of 45 points – one better than Alan Hough and Duane Yale, who picked up second prize on countback from Ray Swann and Steve Barns.

Club steward Martin Merritt, who rounded off a successful day with a sing song, probably didn't want 2008 to end as he continued to produce some excellent winter golf during December.

The 15-handicapper carded 19 points to grab a podium finish in the latest nine-hole comp, before bagging 18 to win the Winter League back nine event. Paul Taylor (16) was runner-up on countback from Nathan Perry.

In the Vets Turkey Trot competition, Chris Eddon (37 points) triumphed by one from Roger Chamberlain, with four players a further point adrift on 35.
