Belgian international Thomas Vermaelen took part in his first training session for Arsenal as the Gunners squad returned for pre-season training.

The £8.5m former Ajax defender joined the likes of Tomas Rosicky, Eduardo, William Gallas, Samir Nasri and Andrey Arshavin, while Philippe Senderos was back after completing his loan spell with Milan.

Among those missing were Theo Walcott and Kieran Gibbs, who reached the European Under-21 Championship final with England, and Cesc Fabregas, part of Spain's squad at the Confederations Cup in South Africa.

They will return later this month.
