The sponsors of the proposed Church Academy at Unity College in Northampton have announced it will be called Bishop Leeson Academy from September should it be given the go-ahead.
The name for the proposed academy was unanimously agreed by The Diocese of Peterborough, Bishop Stopford School, Moulton College and Northamptonshire County Council because it underlines the school's grounding in Christian values.

Bishop Spencer L
eeson was Bishop of Peterborough from 1949 until his death in 1956 and his book Christian Education influenced the 1944 Butler Education Act, which made secondary education free for all pupils and opened up secondary education for girls. The act also introduced prayer to all state-funded schools on a daily basis.

Reverend Ian Cundy, the Bishop of Peterborough, said: "Choosing the right name for the proposed Academy is an important part of communicating that students, staff and parents would be entering a new era.

"The name demonstrates that the school would remain rooted in its Christian values but, like Bishop Leeson himself, would be reaching high to provide an excellent education for all."

If the Cabinet of Northamptonshire County Council agrees the closure of Unity College at its meeting on April 14, and the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) approves the Academy proposals at the end of April, Bishop Leeson Academy will open in September 2009.

Meanwhile, the county's education chiefs have confirmed an outline timescale for consultation on academy status for Weston Favell School.

Councillor Kirkbride (Con, Bugbrooke) cabinet member for children and young people, confirmed yesterday that a full consultation process will begin at the end of June and run through until October to take in exam results.

Agree with you, Fedup! I have a daughter there already and another going up in September. I usually start purchasing uniform in a month or two before it runs out, so I'm guessing we wait to hear if it will be an academy or not, and then either a mad dash for original uniform or a fight to buy 'new' uniform, which if they change the uniform when money is tight for all, then that's just rubbish. Leave it as Unity, why cause more problems..

Wouldnt a new school uniform consist of a change in tie and possibly a new school badge to sew on a blazer? Neither of these items can be construed as a major expense.

Knowing the Church of England they will have them all wearing Papal Purple Blazers and green trousers. After all have seen the way some of their vicars and bishops dress!

with regards to Born and bred's comment. Unity students uniform is not a blazer and tie school. The Unity emblem is stitched into their polo shirts and sweatshirts, so no, it will be a whole new uniform unless they provide new badges to sew over the Unity stitched emblem, (not!)
You obviously do not have a child attending Unity otherwise you would know about the uniform, so to parents, it WILL be an expense.

Bishop Leeson School? Unity College? Do you mean Trinity Upper School? Will they be getting a new sign outside or will it be cheaper to install a huge blackboard to write the schools current name onto?
