BUSINESSES and organisations looking to support a charity in 2012 are being asked to consider the Chronicle & Echo’s Northampton General Hospital appeal.

Macmillan Cancer Support is appealing for help from county schools, companies and community groups to raise the £700,000 still needed to fund the new £2.2 million haematology unit at NGH, which opened to patients this week.

Claire Monks, from the charity, said Macmillan would work with groups to help them with their fund-raising, no matter how big or small they were. She said: “There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach, and we will work with anybody to see what works best for them.

“There are lots of fund-raising ideas on our website, or people can contact our fund-raising office, but the limit to what is possible is people’s imaginations.”

Among those already fund-raising for the appeal are pupils at Campion School in Bugbrooke.

Sixth-formers Victoria Summers, Lydia Prince and Emma Masters visited the new unit to see where their money would be spent. They said: “So far we have raised just over £2,300 through events including Campion’s Got Talent in December, cake sales and non-uniform days. We would like to get up to £3,000 before our exams start in April.

“It’s fantastic to see where the money is going. The new unit is bright and light, and doesn’t feel like a hospital.

“The visit has given us a boost to go back to school and give the fund-raising a last push to get as much as we can.”

Marion Hardacre, study centre manager, has been supporting the students’ efforts. She said: “The charity was chosen in a student vote, as they wanted to help people in the local community.”

Mrs Hardacre said the school was keen for its students to raise money for charity alongside their studies, and staff were always impressed by the response: “They spend a lot of their own time organising events and we think it’s admirable how they juggle it with their schoolwork.”
