Fans show support for Cobblers and help Chron’s charity appeal
Northampton Town FC V Macclesfield.
MORE than 4,500 football fans packed the stands at Sixfields last night to cheer the Cobblers to a home win, and to raise money for the Chronicle & Echo’s charity appeal.
Northampton Town defeated rivals Macclesfield Town 3-2 in a tense match, securing the first three points of six the club hopes to gain in its games this week, as part of its battle to avoid relegation from the football league.
Some 4,529 fans were there to witness the victory, and many dug deep to support the Chron’s appeal with Macmillan Cancer Support to raise money for the new £2.2 million haematology unit at Northampton General Hospital, following the lead of the club, which is donating a portion of the ticket price for each of its games this week to the appeal.
Michael Dearn, aged 74, of Sywell, attends the Cobblers’ games every week. He said: “The atmosphere was pretty good tonight, and the stands are fuller. It’s always good to see the club get good extra support.
“It’s very important we stay up. It would be very difficult to come back from if we went down.”
Graham Brothers, aged 55, of Parklands, Northampton, said: “The play was a bit disappointing tonight, but I’m pleased with the result. There was a good atmosphere and more people than usual. It’s good to see more people coming in.
“It’s desperately important we stay up. It’s unthinkable we could go down.”
Club spokesman Gareth Willsher said the club had been delighted with ticket sales for both the Macclesfield game, and its match against Port Vale on Saturday.
Speaking before last night’s game he said: “The Macclesfield game is certainly busier than it would otherwise have been expected to be, and our Saturday sales are very encouraging three days ahead of the game.”
Tickets for the Port Vale game, as for the Macclesfield match, have been discounted to £10 for adults and £5 for children.
They are available by calling the Cobblers box office on Northampton 683777 or visiting the website www.cobblers2cancer.co.uk. They can also be bought on the gate on the day.
