Cobblers player-coach Holt calls for full house at club’s crucial games
COBBLERS player-coach Andy Holt has urged individuals, businesses and organisations in Northampton to buy tickets for the club’s two crucial games later this month to support players as they battle to save the team from relegation.
In a message to town residents the 33-year-old midfielder said players wanted to see the grandstands at Sixfields packed with home supporters for the matches against Macclesfield Town and Port Vale, which he said would give them a boost in their bid to secure a vital six points and save Northampton Town Football Club’s place in league competition.
Holt reminded residents by buying the discounted tickets they would also be helping a worthy cause – the Chronicle & Echo and Macmillan Cancer Support’s campaign to raise £1.55 million for a new blood cancer treatment unit at Northampton General Hospital.
He said: “When you’re top of the league it’s always easy to get people behind you.
“But the situation now is we are bottom of the league and we need some wins, and I think the crowd can play a big part in that, and cheer us on as we try to get three points in these games.
“Our fans can see we’re working hard and trying to do the right thing, but the results just aren’t coming at the moment.
“But hopefully if they stick with us we will get some good results at these games and move up the league.”
The Cobblers are currently bottom of League Two, and victory in both games could help them avoid relegation.
Holt said players were positive about their chances.
He said: “There is a very positive atmosphere in the team at the moment. Our new boss has come on board and we are positive, despite the fact the results have not been as good as we expected.
“We know the importance of these games, and the vital points on offer.
“Hopefully all our fans will come down, watch the games and get behind us, supporting us and supporting the charity.”
Adult tickets for the Macclesfield and Port Vale games – normally priced £19 – will be sold for £10, with £4 of that going to Macmillan Cancer Support.
Holt said he believed it was important for the Cobblers team to do its bit for charity... even in its hour of need.
He said: “It’s very easy really. As footballers we are in the limelight and seen to be, or should be, model professionals, who can influence people around them. By us backing charities hopefully the general public in the county will as well.”
Karen Shortt, from Macmillan, said: “We would like to thank all at the Cobblers for deciding to support Macmillan. This is a fantastic partnership and we would encourage everyone to head to the games, support the team and help us reach that all important target to fund the new haematology suite.”

Jumped up know it all
Friday, February 10, 2012 at 08:11 AMYou got yourselves in to this mess, not the fans! Locking the stable door after the horse has bolted.....! Why didn't you offer all the empty seats for the past 3-4 months at discounted prices?, even given away to local schools on the Friday afternoon would have helped rally support and revenue from merchandise and food sales, Kids for a quid or midweek shows or concerts to increase your lack lustre attitude to running a proper business. This football club needs some spark to re-ignite it!!!! That being said the macmillan cause is brilliant and alot more sports venues should follow suit!!!
