Cobblers manager knuckles down to work in the club shop selling tickets for appeal game
COBBLERS manager Aidy Boothroyd did his bit to encourage fans to get behind the club as it battles to avoid relegation, by selling tickets for the team’s crunch matches next week himself.
Boothroyd manned the club shop at Sixfields yesterday afternoon, answering the phone and dealing with customers in person.
As well as selling season tickets to fans, he offered discounted seats for the club’s games against Macclesfield Town and Port Vale next week that are raising money for the Chronicle & Echo’s charity appeal.
Forty per cent of the money made from the discounted tickets will go to the Chron’s and Macmillan Cancer Support’s £1.55 million campaign to raise money for the new £2.2 million haematology unit at Northampton General Hospital.
The Cobblers are currently bottom of League Two, and victory in the Macclesfield game on Tuesday and the Port Vale game next Saturday could help the team avoid relegation from the football league.
Boothroyd stressed the importance of the whole town getting behind the club at this vital time.
He said: “It’s a big town and I think every town needs a sporting company.
“Having experienced the same with Watford, I know the feel-good factor it can bring if the town’s teams are doing well. It gives people a sense of pride and makes them feel really good about themselves.
“Teams and players feed off the crowd, and the crowd feeds off the players,” he added. “It works both ways.”
Boothroyd said he believed the team had a good chance of securing wins in next week’s games.
He said: “I think we’ve been a bit tense in recent games but [our win on] Tuesday brought a real sense of relief and looking forward to the future.
“We are always confident, and go into every game looking to win it, whether it is at home or away.
“And I think the squad right now is as good as it ever has been. Certainly since I’ve been here it’s the best group of players I have had.”
He encouraged people to get tickets for the matches next week that are raising money for the Chron’s appeal, saying: “It is a great cause. Cancer touches almost everybody’s lives, and Macmillan nurses do a fantastic job.
“I think we’re raising money for something that is close to the hearts of lots of people.”
Adult tickets for the Macclesfield and Port Vale games – normally £19 – cost £10, with £4 going to the Chron’s appeal.
Children’s entry costs £5, with the appeal getting £2.
