Chairman hoping for big crowd as Cobblers battle against relegation and help raise money for Chron’s charity appeal
Northampton Town V Macclesfield
A FINAL rallying call has been issued to residents of Northampton to attend tomorrow’s Cobblers match against Port Vale to cheer on the club as it battles to avoid relegation, and to raise money for the Chronicle & Echo’s charity appeal.
Some 4,529 people attended Tuesday night’s game against Macclesfield Town, hundreds of whom had bought a discounted ticket from the price of which a proportion will go to the Chron’s appeal with Macmillan Cancer Support to raise money for the new £2.2 million haematology unit at Northampton General Hospital. Supporters attending the game also dug deep into their pockets to collectively donate £360 to the appeal before the game.
Tickets for the club’s game against Port Vale tomorrow afternoon will also benefit the appeal. Adult tickets – normally priced £19 – are discounted to £10, with £4 going to the appeal. Children’s tickets cost £5, with £2 going to the appeal.
Bernadette Halton, area fund-raising manager covering Northamptonshire for Macmillan, encouraged people to get behind the link-up by buying tickets for tomorrow’s match. She said: “We wish the Cobblers all the best and hope they can win their third match in a row.
“We are sure the presence of all the supporters there will really encourage the players to do well.
“By supporting the football team, fans will also be part of team Macmillan, backing the team behind the fund-raising for the new Macmillan Haematology Suite at Northampton General Hospital, and therefore helping people affected by cancer.”
Meanwhile the leader of Northampton Borough Council, councillor David Mackintosh (Con, Rectory Farm), and the authority’s cabinet, will attend tomorrow’s game.
Councillor Mackintosh said: “Northampton Town really need our support right now. It’s great to have a team in the football league and we want them to stay there.
“We’ll be cheering along with the Cobblers faithful and hoping they make it three wins on the trot.”
David Cardoza, club chairman, said: “A good result this weekend could see us out of the bottom two for the first time since Christmas, so this is a big day for us and also for the appeal.
“We are set for a big crowd to help us try to achieve the result we need, and to raise some vital funds for a fantastic charity.”
