THE family of a car enthusiast, who died after suffering from prostate cancer, has warned other people to be aware of the disease, on the day a dozen Ferraris turned up to his funeral.

Michael Mewies, from Long Buckby, died on New Year’s Day, aged 64. He was a forecourt manager at what is now the Allen Ford car dealership in Harlestone Road, Duston, for more than 30 years.

Son-in-law Leon Mangan said: “Mike’s great passions were collecting model Ferraris and model trains. He had hundreds of Ferraris, and used to be a steward at the Ferrari Owners’ Club track days along with his friend, Fred Marriott.

“He loved everything about Ferraris, and Fred thought getting a lot of them together for his funeral would be a nice way to give him a send-off.”

Mr Mangan thanked Northampton General Hospital on behalf of the family for their care of Mr Mewies during his illness, and said the family wanted to warn men about the dangers of prostate cancer.

He said: “We are saying ‘Don’t be shy, if you think you have a problem go and see a doctor. Don’t leave it until it’s too late’.”
