OLDER and younger people were invited to take photographs of each other in Northampton town centre as part of a project aiming to promote understanding between different generations.

A stand was set up in the Grosvenor Shopping Centre yesterday where people under the age of 25 and those over the age of 50 could work together to produce the perfect image.

All the photographs will be exhibited at the Age UK offices in Billing Road, Northampton, on Saturday, March 17 from 11am until 2pm.

The event was organised by the Northampton Volunteering Centre as part of the School of Life project.

Priti Chavda, project co-ordinator for Northampton, said: “The whole project is about getting older and younger people to work together to lessen the gap between the generations.

“The older people and younger students have been teaching each other how to take the best photographs.”

Peter Going, one of the older people who had his photo taken, said: “The younger people helping have been fantastic and I’ve really enjoyed working with them.”

Nigel Munjoma, aged 18, said: “I’ve enjoyed learning how to frame a picture properly and have used some camera equipment I’ve never used before.”

The programme is being delivered as a result of funding from the Big Lottery Fund.

A camera “trouble shooting” workshop will be held on March 17, the same day as the exhibition, where people will be able to learn about shutter speeds, when to use a flash and how to focus in taking pictures.

On March 27, there will be a School of Life musical at Northampton School for Girls featuring people aged 50 and over.

Other events the School of Life projects has run in the past include Nintendo Wii workshops, mobile phone training, knitting groups and gardening projects.
