Rotary starts hunt for 2012 Young Musician

YOUNG musicians from Northampton have taken part in the first round of a competition organised by the town’s Rotary Club.

Singers, choirs and instrumentalists attended Malcolm Arnold Academy on Sunday to take part in Rotary Young Musician 2012.

Performers are grouped according to age, and as to whether they are instrumentalists or vocalists and, in each group and category, the club’s independent adjudicator may only approve one performer to go forward.

Those approved to go through to the next round this year included Catherine Eden on the trombone, Andrew King on the piano, Zoe Lumsden on the clarinet and vocalists Lauren Jones and Emma Gault. The Northampton High School Wind Quintet will also be hoping to equal their district final position they achieved last year.

Organiser Chris Mahoney said: “Despite the poor weather conditions it was pleasing that only one expected entrant did not arrive. It was also fortunate our adjudicator was able to get through from Rutland. Our club wishes to encourage young people to perform in public, and it is satisfying we have some who first took part as juniors, still coming back with an ever more polished performance.”
