Location no barrier as Northampton Sea Cadets named best in UK
SEA Cadets in landlocked Northamptonshire have been named the top team in the country.
Northampton and Wellingborough Sea Cadets were presented with the Canada Trophy on Tuesday night, to mark their achievement as the leading group in the country this year.
The award, which is made annually by Captain of the Sea Cadets, Captain Mark Windsor RN, is given to the top Sea Cadet unit in the UK, and the Northampton group has won the award once before in 2004.
Rear Admiral Martin Alabaster, who is the serving Royal Navy flag officer, responsible for reserve forces including the Sea Cadets, was joined by Captain Harry Harsch, naval advisor of Canadian defence liaison staff based at the Canadian High Commission, to present the award, and each cadet received a commemorative medal.
Chris Read, Lieutenant (SCC) Royal Navy Reserve, commanding officer of Northampton and Wellingborough Sea Cadets, said the trophy dated back to 1948 when the Navy League of Canada first visited the UK, and added: “We are really pleased to have won again because it shows we have kept up our high standards over the last six years. It’s a tremendous achievement for our unit.”
Lieutenant Read said the Northampton unit mixed with Wellingborough in 2005 and he thinks that this helped the Sea Cadets to succeed.
He added: “We have branched out to allow other people a turn to access our facilities and get them involved in what we do. We are a community organisation and want to reach out to as many people as possible.”
Lieutenant Read said the success of the organisation was down to the work of the adult volunteers, those who run the unit and a huge amount of support from the community.
He added: “Everybody involved in the Sea Cadets is proud and over the moon that we have been recognised as the leading unit. I am hoping it will generate even more interest in our unit.
“It’s not all about winning though. It’s about the fact our Cadets enjoy doing something really constructive which develops leadership and teamwork skills. The success comes from us developing our young people.”
