Boom time for trust-run gyms

THE number of people using the former council-run gyms in Northampton has increased by 12 per cent in the past year.

Ian Redfern, managing director of Northampton Leisure Trust which took over the running of the gyms, said a decision had also been taken to lengthen the opening hours of Mounts Baths, Lings Forum and Danes Camp Leisure Centres to cope with the increased demand.

Mr Redfern said: “Next month getting to the gym will be even easier as all of our leisure centres will be open from 6.45am. In the last 12 months we have seen a big increase in the numbers of people using our Trilogy Gyms.

“This is fantastic news for us, as we are always happy to help people get active and improve their fitness and health.

“At the same time we have had more people ask us about opening earlier so they can enjoy their workout before work, so this is exactly what we are doing.

“If you would like to get your day off to a great start why not come along to Danes Camp, Lings Forum Leisure Centre or Mounts Baths to find out what you are missing out on.”

Latest figures show the number of people owning a Trilogy Gym pass, which entitles them to use Mounts Baths, Lings Forum or Danes Camp, has increased by 12 per cent since January 2011.

From February 6, all three gyms will be opening at 6.45am. The current opening times are 7.30am at Mounts and 7.15am at Lings Forum and Danes Camp.

Laura Ball, aged 25, an applications project manager, of Ecton Brook, Northampton, said: “It’s good the gyms are opening early as they have been getting much busier over the last year or so.

“I only really come in the evening and go to classes but knowing that the gym will be open earlier in the mornings I would be tempted to go swimming some mornings and still be able to get back home and sorted for work in enough time. If I’m tempted, I’m sure other people will if they can get out of bed that early.”

The three gyms were given a £500,000 in December 2010 which included a full redecoration and were supplied with new top of the range cardio fitness equipment.
