120,000 lights and Christmas trees promise a sea of colour in Northampton

WORK starts tonight putting up Northampton’s 60ft Christmas tree that will be the focus of the town’s decorations which this year will include 120,000 lights.

The decorations will be strung across Northampton’s town centre streets ahead of the official launch of the Christmas celebrations on November 26.

According to Northampton Borough Council, the main tree alone in the Market Square will be twinkling with 14,000 lights.

Lights will be gradually turned on from November 22 to ensure they are all working for the big launch.

Once the cross-street lights are up from today, six giant Christmas trees are expected to be put in place by a crane tonight.

They include 50ft, 40ft and 30ft trees at All Saints, at the Guildhall, and in Abington Street.

From next Tuesday, a further 150 smaller trees will be placed outside shops and businesses.

The cost of these has been met by individual firms, with financial support from Northampton Town Centre Business Improvement District (BID).

To illustrate the extent of this year’s decorations, the borough council has calculated they will need 950m of string lights, a kilometre of flexi cable, 2.5km of rope lights, 10,000 cable ties and 134 electrical plugs and sockets.

There will also be what the Guildhall has described as “200 flashing strobe lights”.

Borough leader Councillor David Mackintosh said: “We have worked really closely with businesses and other agencies to create a great festive atmosphere in Northampton this year, to make the town a beautiful place to shop, visit the theatres and restaurants and everything else we have to offer.”
