Small and medium sized firms will be given a better chance of winning public sector building contracts under a proposal put forward by a Northampton MP.
Labour MP for Northampton North Sally Keeble is urging the Government to provide local authorities with powers to support local building firms in awarding contracts.
Mrs Keeble tabled an amendment to Section 135 of the Local Democracy, Economic and Construction Bill yesterday evening in the hope it will help to maintain a diverse range of contractors in the different local authority areas.
She said: "In these difficult economic times it is vital that building firms are able to compete for contracts in their local area.
"This amendment will ensure that local councils are able to consider them and help ensure their future during this downturn and beyond, as well as taking into account normal value-for-money considerations."
