Following on from the opening race of the campaign last month, when 355 finished at St Neots, a record 388 ran at Bushfield on Sunday with a further 105 in the junior race.

A big factor behind the rising numbers is the addition of Stamford Striders and Nene Valley Harriers this season, and the latter are largely responsible for the improving quality as they won with ease on Sunday.

Nene Valley had been rumoured to be joining the league for several years, which brought resistance from some local clubs who feared it would become a one-sided competition.

When the club were accepted into the league, they stated they would be fielding what amounts to their second team, but their squad that lined up on Sunday was arguably the strongest seen in the 15-year history of the popular series.

Other clubs have had more runners placed higher - indeed Werrington Joggers used to boast 10 runners in the top 20 - but Nene Valley dominated against a field with considerably more depth.

Those who were against the club joining may now claim: "I told you so," but on the positive side Nene Valley are raising the standards for others to match. Other clubs or individuals can either raise the white flag or get dragged to faster times and improve their own performances.

But despite the victory at Bushfield, it seems unlikely NVH will regularly field such a strong side. John Pike and Ian Aunger needed a run-out after recent injuries while European Duathlon Championships representative Sean Beard also wanted to test his form after little action recently, but generally they will concentrate on higher standard races.

Although a handful of Harriers previously ran in the league for second claim clubs - some even joining clubs on that basis specifically to run in the league - there were others who tended to look down their noses at what they regarded as second-rate races.

That is certainly not the case now for the likes of Pete Galpin and British international Ellen Leggate have added a touch of class to the league, and the strength in depth is considerably better than it has ever been.

That fact is indicated by the fact that behind winner Galpin were the reigning Cambridgeshire 5,000m champion Beard, past and present Cambs Road League champions Pike and Alex Tate, plus British veteran indoor 3,000m silver medallist medallist Aunger.

Galpin made it two wins out of two in the league this campaign, and in between he has also won the Fenland 10 and Riverside Half-marathon, while he now runs the Hereward Relays on Sunday and the Nene Valley 10 a week after.

It is all part of a busy race plan that will eventually take him to the London Marathon.

Galpin, team-mate Derek Lines and Beard broke clear around halfway after a sizeable pack had followed the early pace of Pike, who is returning from a hamstring injury.

Galpin edged clear around three miles, leaving Lines and Beard to battle it for second - the BRJ man getting a gap around three miles to make it a 1-2 for his club.

Beard was happy with third and with Pike, talented teenager Kyle Tombleson and Aunger also in the top eight they easily took team honours.

Paul Halford - a winner over the distance earlier this year at the Run For The Loo race at Eye - ran well for 10th and a sub-28 minute performance as Werrington Joggers finished sixth and was only 20 seconds down on what he was running during the summer.

Brian Corleys was 13th as he again led the Bushfield Joggers challenge, just ahead of Graham Williams who 24 hours earlier had been a non-running reserve for England at the Home Veteran International.

Despite three in the first 12, BRJ had to settle for seventh with World Triathlon Championships representative Steve Kaye leading the PACTRAC challenge as they took eighth.

Huntingdon Athletic Club were below strength and could only finish ninth while league newcomers Stamford are not yet living up to expectations and surprisingly didn't have anyone in the top 30.

Colin McAnespie produced the best Frostbite League performance from a March Athletic Club member for some time while Eye were again helped by the efforts of second-claim member Pete Kirwin.

Yaxley Runners had a record turnout of 28 members – about 50 per cent of their membership – beating their previous best of 25 set 11 years ago, but Bourne Town Harriers continue to disappoint. A lack of female competitors is a big factor but Bourne should really be capable of a top six place, not finishing second from bottom.

Thorney Running Club once again filled the wooden spoon position.
Bourne made up for their poor senior showing with a fine junior team success, with Matthew Green taking second place behind Werrington Jogger Paul Dunn, grandson of one of the club founders Allan Haines.
